The Way To Win At Interview

Success at interview comes from following a planned process.

The notes below are a guide on how to succeed in your interview. This is a sales process - your first job is to sell yourself to the interviewer/s.

The Company
In considering a career at the company you have applied to, try to find out some detail about:-

  • Product Range
  • Position in the market
  • Strengths & Weaknesses
  • Culture

The Interview
Plan your interview. If you know that the interview is likely to last an hour, break the time down as follows:-

1. 5 minutes getting acquainted with the interviewers
2. 20 minutes finding out the employer's requirements
3. 20 minutes matching your abilities and experience to these requirements
4. 10 minutes overcoming objections
5. 5 minutes closing

Keeping strictly to this will be difficult but it does help to use a plan to cover all these areas. Try to guide the interview to your plan.

STEP 1
The interviewer's most lasting impression of you will be formed in the first 60 seconds.

  • A smile and firm handshake will help make that impression a good one.
  • However nervous you are, try to appear calm and confident.
  • Try and appear enthusiastic rather than timid.

STEP 2
In this section of the interview ask the questions that will enable you to find out what the interviewer wants.

  • Ask open questions eg How? What? Where? When? Why? Make notes on the answers.
  • Take at least 5 questions to ask the interviewer in this section.
  • Do NOT ask about money, holidays, sickness benefit, cars, expenses etc at the first interview.

STEP 3
This is the section where you can talk about yourself.

  • Refer to your notes and illustrate how your skills and ability match the interviewer's requirements.
  • Explain how you have achieved your success eg through accumulated skills, hard work and effort.
  • Take proof along with you eg letters of congratulation, sales league tables etc
  • Sell the benefits you could bring to the company.

STEP 4
This is the most important section in the interview.
Ask the following questions:-

  • Is there anything else you would like to know?
  • Have you any doubts that I could do the job?

STEP 5
If the interviewer tells you that he thinks you can do the job:-

  • Ask the interviewer when they want you to start.
  • Tell him/her that you really like the sound of the job and that you would like to work for the company.
  • Be enthusiastic and smile.
  • Gain information about the next stage (if there is one) and that you are on the shortlist.
  • However well it went DO NOT get outside and punch the air, shout or show any violent emotion.
  • Leave calmly, confidently and professionally.

AND FINALLY..........
Call us!
Please do not neglect to call us as soon as you possibly can after the interview. We need to hear your response before we talk to the company.

How To Write A Dynamic CV

Personal Details

  • Begin with brief personal details such as; date of birth, location, marital status and contact address and telephone numbers.

Education

  • Summarise, depending upon your target job and your qualifications. The most important are those which are more recent, and/or those that are relevant or necessary for the position.

Profile

  • Highlight how your skills and qualifications match the company's specific needs.

Experience

  • Employment history should be logical and consistent starting from the most recent position and working backwards.
  • Gaps between jobs must be clearly explained. (This is the Security Industry)
  • Use appropriate titles for previous jobs to demonstrate clearly that you are suitably qualified for your desired position.
  • Give a concise description of your previous employers - their products, services, industry, etc - and your role in the company.
  • Quantify your accomplishments using numbers, percentages, etc as this makes your details memorable and believable.
  • Give examples to support your statements, such as names of key customers or projects.
  • Sentences should frequently start with an action word. Examples include; achieved, produced, exceeded, compiled, conducted, created, designed, developed, established, implemented, introduced, invented and negotiated.
  • Explain how, in your previous Assignments, you increased sales and profits, improved productivity, saved time and cut costs, hit targets or established good customer relationships etc.
  • Provide evidence of competencies such as; your communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility, initiative, organisational ability and teamwork.
  • Include any relevant awards or honours you may have received.

Overall

  • The layout should be neat and uncluttered, with an easy-to-read sequence of sections and no large blocks of text.
  • Aim at covering approximately 2 A4 pages, depending on the position you are looking for.
  • Check for errors in spelling or grammar and omit all unnecessary words.
  • Bullet points can often be more effective than long, descriptive sentences.
  • Hobbies and interests should be included only if they serve to reveal characteristics, skills or accomplishments that support your career objective.
